(1) diocese still in existence in 20th century

(2) archdiocese during the middle ages

(3) archdiocese in the 20th century

Note: the ancient diocese of Maillezais (lies NE of La Rochelle) was closed and transferred to Luçon in 1317 AD.

Note: the diocese of Maguelone was transferred to Montpellier in 1536 AD.

Many of the ancient bishoprics were suppressed in 1802 AD following the late 18th century French Revolution. Later, new bishoprics were erected and some that were previously suppressed were reestablished. The dates listed above with each diocese/archdiocese are those of their original establishment. It must be noted that this list is not all-inclusive since there were, over the centuries, a number of other bishoprics of lesser duration and significance in France.

Dioceses established since the French Revolution (1789) other than those listed in the above table include: Laval, Lille, Le Havre, St. Claud, Chambery, Moulins, plus Pontoise, St. Denis, Nanterre, Choissy-le-Roy, and Corbeil which are located near Paris.

The information on the French dioceses published in Volume 1 of Tanguay contains some inaccuracies and errors but is still useful. The information published in the volume by Olivier on the same subject is very incomplete and unreliable.
