1 & 2 contain the marriages and volume 3 the history ( not always reliable).
Originally prepared by the Drouin Institute of Genealogy in Montreal, the
rights have recently been purchased by the AFGS of Rhode Island. Despite
3 annexes of corrections, there are still many errors. Many of Tanguay's
errors are simply repeated in this set.

1871-90 French
Contents and Critique A
phenominal work by father Cyprien Tanguay (1819-1902) it is the only source
for many records that are no longer in existence. Some parishes were overlooked.
Rev. Tanguay, being a Catholic priest, it includes only the baptismal dates
of illigitimate children. For incomplete marriages, he associated children
with parents as best he could but often erred in these assumptions.

Contents and Critique Now
in CD-ROM, contains all the notarial acts of Quebec from 1765 (1775 for
Montreal). Ten % of these are available on the Internet. It is basically
an index or resume and does not list all the persons mentioned in the original
acts but ony the principle persons involved. Spelling of names has not
been standardized and thus makes it more difficult to recognize the persons
mentioned.

Contents and Critique Original
editor: Gabriel Drouin of the Drouin Genealogical Institute of Montreal,
the 49 volume set containing nearly 2 million marriages mainly of Quebec
and neighboring areas organized alphabetically by groom's surname with
dit name if any and then by given name and then spouce's maiden name, still
does not contain all the marriages of Quebec. A 64 volume set by brides
was also produced. Both sets of volumes (113 in all) sold for about $25,000
Canadian. There have been 5 different editions. A third part is on microfilm
and/or microfiches but some microfiche without reference appear to be fictitious
and are not a true series of corrections. The biggest problem with these
volumes (by grooms) is their poor printing quality making them difficult
to read at times. There are often major errors due to the typist mis-reading
handwritten sources, e.g. Phaneuf was often read as Jarret since they look
similar when written longhand. All records should be verified against other
sources. Some marriages before 1765 are found only in the Red Drouin. Most
large Fr.-Can. Genealogy Societies have at least one set. There's a rumor
that the new AFGS owners in Rhode Island will be producing a set of CD-ROMs
in the not-too-distant future. Initial price will likely be several $1,000.
