What is A.D.G.? = Average Daily Gain

 What does this mean? While looking for a goat that is a good grower, for meat production, a high A.D.G. will show rapid growth of muscle and bone as well as genetic make up. For the 4-H Market Projects, some county fairs have a rate of gain class, with a late spring/early summer weigh in, and then a weigh in during the fair prior to the show. The higher A.D.G. most likely will show which animal is the faster grower to give a good chance at winning the "Rate of Gain" classes. However a market project buyer cannot feed the animal less because the animal has a higher A.D.G. over another. The buyer must continue to feed the animal out. Other benefits to monitoring the A.D.G., in kids, it most likely will show good milk production rates in the mothering doe, as well as a good genetic makeup of the kids growth inherited from the parents. These are strictly the opinions of EBF after researching A.D.G. and feel it is important to the meat goat industry, and to improve the boer breed. We feel if these numbers improve yearly, we are producing better meat animals that are better than the prior year.
